Ferdinand Claims England Cannot Move Ahead In The World Cup

Rio Ferdinand has said that England would not be able to move ahead in the FIFA World Cup 2014 if they keep defending in the manner they have done in their last two matches.

The Three Lions have lost both the matches that they have played in the ongoing World Cup. Although, they have suffered defeats only by narrow margins, but, one would say that they deserved to lose on both the occasions because they just didn’t look the better team on the field.

Neither has England looked good upfront nor in the deep. Yes, they have scored a goal each in the two matches, but, they have missed scoring opportunities as well.

And as far as the defence is concerned, it’s just been pathetic and it has raised questions over Roy Hodgson’s selections too.

In both the matches, the English defenders have made some basic mistakes.

Ferdinand who himself is a defender and has had a lot of experience of playing at the international level was clearly not looking happy with the performance of the England back line.

Speaking during a television programme, Ferdinand said, “If our defenders keep playing like this, it would be extremely hard for us to make our way ahead in the tournament. There were not too many things in our performance tonight which we can get encouraged with.”

“Wayne scored for the first time in a World Cup. So, that might be one positive, but, we’ve got to admit that the gun players of our teams especially the defenders didn’t live up to the expectations.”

The Three Lions’ fate in the World Cup is not in their hands now. They are dependent on the outcomes of the matches of the other teams. They would want Italy to defeat Costa Rica in tomorrow’s match.
